Getting engaged is an exciting milestone. Congratulations to both you and your fiancé! Once the date is set, your venue secured, and your photographer booked, many couples find themselves asking the same question: What comes next?
Typically, the next step is planning your engagement session. Engagement photos are often used for save-the-dates, which are sent out approximately 12–14 months before the wedding day, making this session an important part of your overall wedding experience. But with so many options available, knowing where to begin can feel overwhelming.
I take a highly guided, personalized approach with every couple I work with. Once we are officially booked, I provide thoughtfully curated resources to ensure the planning process feels seamless and stress-free. One of those resources is my Engagement Session Prep Guide, designed to help couples clarify the vision for their session, whether that’s a romantic cityscape, a quiet natural setting, or something entirely unique to them.
Together, we explore questions like:
Do you gravitate toward an editorial, city-inspired feel or a more organic, nature-driven backdrop?
Would you prefer something elevated and refined or relaxed and effortless?
What truly reflects who you are as a couple?
I have photographed engagement sessions that include everything from playful activities, like couples bringing a volleyball to incorporate something meaningful to them, to cinematic, fashion-forward moments, including a bride who wanted to recreate the iconic opening scene of Gossip Girl, dancing atop a bar à la Serena van der Woodsen. The beauty of an engagement session is that there are no rules. It can be as timeless or as distinctive as you choose.
If you are still deciding on the perfect setting, I have curated a list of over 30 engagement session locations throughout Pittsburgh, all places I have personally photographed, to help inspire and guide you as you plan your session.
Downtown Pittsburgh Rooftop

For the most central, iconic Pittsburgh skyline views, downtown rooftops are a standout option. With clean lines, modern architecture, and sweeping city backdrops, they’re perfect for a polished, editorial engagement session. There are several rooftops to choose from, each offering a slightly different look, and the best time to photograph them is sunset through early evening when the city begins to glow. This is an especially great fit for dressier outfits and champagne pops.
North Shore

The North Shore is one of Pittsburgh’s most versatile engagement session locations, offering river views, skyline backdrops, and a mix of open walkways and architectural elements. This area photographs beautifully at golden hour and into early evening. Metered street parking and nearby garages make it relatively convenient, though weekends and game days can be busier. Early mornings or weekday evenings are ideal for a quieter experience.
Roberto Clemente Bridge

An iconic Pittsburgh landmark, the Roberto Clemente Bridge is perfect for couples who want a bold, unmistakably Pittsburgh backdrop. The bridge works especially well during sunrise or off-peak hours to avoid heavy foot traffic. Parking is available in nearby garages and street spots on both the Downtown and North Shore sides. Because it’s an active pedestrian bridge, flexibility and patience are key, but the payoff is timeless, city-forward imagery.
Hot Metal Bridge

The Hot Metal Bridge connects Oakland to the South Side and offers a bold, industrial aesthetic with strong lines, river views, and a more relaxed pace than some of the busier downtown bridges. It’s a great option for couples who want an urban look with a little more edge. The surrounding area allows for easy transitions between bridge views and nearby paths, and sunset is especially beautiful here as the light reflects off the Monongahela River.
The Highline

The Highline is an elevated walking path on Pittsburgh’s South Side (near the South Side Works area), offering skyline views, greenery, and clean lines that photograph beautifully. It’s a great “city-with-breathing-room” option that feels modern and relaxed. Street parking is usually available nearby, and it tends to be quieter than downtown spots. Late afternoon through golden hour is ideal for the most flattering light.
Washington’s Landing

Washington’s Landing is a calm, river-adjacent spot with walking paths and soft waterfront views, perfect for a relaxed session that still feels close to the city. Parking is generally easy with nearby street parking, and weekdays are typically quiet.
A personal favorite for its versatility and light.
Spirit & Tales at The Oaklander Hotel

Spirit & Tales inside The Oaklander Hotel is a great choice if you want your engagement session to feel elevated but still relaxed. The space has an intimate atmosphere that photographs beautifully, especially during the day before they open. It’s perfect for a nice cocktail before heading right outside for some fun street-style shots around Oakland, steps away from the Cathedral of Learning.

Fl.2 at the Fairmont is one of my most frequently recommended editorial locations in the city. In addition to the modern interiors and city views, the staircase is especially beautiful and photographs incredibly well, adding a refined, architectural element to your session. The Fairmont is also a great option for couples interested in an overnight engagement session or Pittsburgh date-night experience, using the hotel rooms and hallways to create a full, story-driven gallery.
*Access to Fl.2 is sometimes limited and may be reserved for Fairmont couples, so advance planning is key.
PPG Square & Fairmont

PPG Place gives you striking glass architecture and clean, modern lines that photograph beautifully in both daylight and early evening. The best part is how walkable this area is, so you can get a lot of visual variety without needing to move your car once you arrive. Weekdays tend to feel more relaxed, while weekends can be busier depending on events downtown.
The Industralist Hotel

The Industralist Hotel blends historic architecture with contemporary design and offers a variety of beautiful interior spaces for engagement sessions. The first-floor Rebel Room bar and restaurant features warm lighting, a refined atmosphere, and stylish details that photograph beautifully, while the second-floor check-in area sometimes features a pop-up bar or seasonal lounge that adds another unique layer to your gallery. The striking black-and-white checkered floor and sleek communal spaces make this location ideal for couples who want a relaxed yet editorial look with a bit of personality. It’s especially well-suited for cooler seasons or as a polished indoor plan-B option.
Con Alma

Con Alma offers a romantic, lounge-like setting with warm lighting that feels intimate and experience-driven. This is a wonderful option for couples who love music and want something stylish and a little different from the typical city backdrop. Con Alma typically requires a photography fee in the $200–$300 range, and sessions should be scheduled during off-hours with advance coordination to keep things smooth and comfortable.
Heinz Chapel + Cathedral of Learning

One of the most iconic engagement session locations in Pittsburgh, Heinz Chapel and the Cathedral of Learning offer dramatic architecture, stone details, and a timeless, romantic feel. These locations photograph beautifully year-round and work especially well for couples who love a classic, editorial aesthetic. Because this is an active university area, timing matters. Early mornings or evenings tend to be calmer, and sessions are best planned outside of peak class hours.
The Carnegie Columns

The Carnegie Columns offer a timeless architectural backdrop with grand scale and clean symmetry that feels both classic and editorial. The stone columns and wide steps create a refined look that pairs beautifully with dressier outfits, and the covered areas can also be a great option on rainy days. Perfectly located in Oakland, this spot is easy to pair with other iconic nearby locations, which makes it simple to build variety into your session, from elegant architecture to street-style moments and nearby church backdrops.
Carnegie Museum of Art – Inside

A fan favorite for engagement sessions, the interior of the Carnegie Museum of Art offers a sophisticated, editorial setting with beautiful light, grand staircases, and thoughtfully curated spaces. This location is ideal for couples who want something artistic and fashion-forward. Shooting inside typically requires purchasing museum tickets for everyone involved, including the photographer, and after 3pm tickets are often half price. Planning around school field trips and busy weekend hours will help ensure a relaxed experience.
Carnegie Museum of Art – Outside

The exterior of the Carnegie Museum of Art features strong architectural lines, neutral stonework, and open walkways that photograph beautifully in any season. This is a great option for couples who want a polished look without indoor restrictions. It pairs well with other Oakland locations and allows for more flexibility in timing and movement.
Lawrenceville

Lawrenceville is one of the most popular neighborhoods for engagement sessions thanks to its mix of charming streets, brick buildings, murals, and locally loved spots like Row House Cinema. This area is ideal for couples who want a relaxed, lifestyle-driven session that still feels polished and intentional. The neighborhood is very walkable, making it easy to move between locations without feeling rushed.

This area works beautifully for couples who live in the South Hills/Mt Lebanon area and want to incorporate a favorite date-night spot into their engagement session. Luma and Hitchhiker Brewing Company offer a modern, lifestyle-driven setting that feels personal and authentic. Sessions here are best planned during off-hours to keep the atmosphere relaxed and to allow the space to shine naturally.
Strip District Tire Yard

The Tire Yard delivers a bold, industrial aesthetic with texture, grit, and a distinctly Pittsburgh edge. It’s perfect for couples who want something more editorial and unconventional, especially paired with a dressier outfit or a flash-style look. This spot can be busier depending on time of day, so planning for off-peak hours helps keep the experience comfortable and efficient.
Terminal in Strip District

The Terminal offers a distinctly Pittsburgh backdrop with a blend of industrial texture, modern design, and location-forward details that feel both elevated and authentic. It’s an ideal choice for couples who want a lot of variety within a small walking radius, which makes the session feel seamless and efficient. There are several parking garages nearby, and one of the best perks is the rooftop areas in the vicinity, which offer beautiful city views for a skyline moment without heading downtown. In the evenings, the Strip District becomes especially lively, which can add great energy to the session, but it also means planning for a little more foot traffic.
Mexican War Streets

The Mexican War Streets neighborhood is perfect for couples drawn to historic charm and quiet, residential streets. With colorful row homes, brick sidewalks, and leafy blocks, this area feels romantic and timeless without being overly formal. It’s a great option for couples who want a neighborhood feel with minimal crowds, especially during weekday evenings.
Kennywood Park

Kennywood is a nostalgic and playful option for couples who want something bold, joyful, and full of personality. With colorful details, classic rides, and a vintage amusement park feel, this location creates engagement photos that feel fun and completely unique. Admission tickets are required for everyone involved, and sessions need to be planned around park hours and crowd levels. When timed thoughtfully, the result is a one-of-a-kind gallery that truly stands out.
Coop De Ville

Coop De Ville is a great option for couples who want an engagement session that feels relaxed, fun, and experience-driven. With casual interiors, playful details, and games like duck bowling, this location allows for natural movement and candid moments that feel effortless and genuine. It works especially well for couples who want their session to feel more like a date night than a photoshoot. Planning for off-hours helps keep the atmosphere comfortable and allows the space to shine.
In Home Session

An in-home engagement session is intimate, personal, and meaningful. These sessions focus on the everyday moments that make your relationship yours, whether that’s playing a board game, cooking dinner together, sharing a bottle of wine, or simply relaxing in the space you call home. Natural window light and thoughtfully chosen indoor lighting create a soft, cozy atmosphere where you are almost guaranteed to feel confident in. You’ll have that feeling of being “right at home.”
Mellon Park

One of my most frequently recommended engagement session locations, Mellon Park is timeless, romantic, and surprisingly versatile. The wrought-iron gates and staircases add a refined, editorial touch, while the fountain and surrounding garden spaces give you a beautiful variety of backdrops within a short walk. Just nearby, the wide open lawn creates a clean, airy look that photographs especially well in soft evening light. It’s usually calmest in the early morning or on weekday evenings, which makes the session feel relaxed and intentional.
Frick Museum and Gardens

The Frick Museum & Gardens are such a beautiful option if you love a classic, polished garden look. There’s so much variety here, from the iron fences and manicured hedges (which really give Frick its signature feel) to the gorgeous greenhouse and all the little paths that feel timeless. The museum itself is free to visit, which makes it easy to turn your session into a full afternoon, and there’s also a cute coffee shop on the grounds that’s perfect for a quick stop before or after photos. One thing to keep in mind is that Frick also functions as a wedding venue, so weekends can be especially busy. Planning for a weekday or an off-peak time usually makes for a smoother, more relaxed experience.
Fun fact: This whole session was shot entirely on film. You can inquire about film only sessions or ask about it as an add on!
Allegheny Riverfront Park

Allegheny Riverfront Park offers a distinctly Pittsburgh setting with river-level walkways, dock and pier moments, and striking bridge views, including the nearby Sister Bridges and Fort Duquesne Bridge. The mix of waterfront paths and elevated overlooks creates a lot of visual variety within a small area, making it easy to capture both intimate and city-forward moments. This park is also approved for wedding ceremonies, which makes it a meaningful option for couples who love the idea of having their engagement session and wedding day connected to the same iconic Pittsburgh backdrop.
Allegheny Common’s East Park

Allegheny Commons East Park is a beautiful North Side option with classic park scenery and one especially standout feature: the bridge, which adds a really cool, unique architectural moment to your gallery. This location is also incredibly convenient to pair with Mexican War Streets since they’re so close, which makes it easy to get both park greenery and charming neighborhood backdrops in one seamless session.
Hartwood Acre’s Meadow

Hartwood Acres Meadow is incredibly beautiful and romantic, and it’s one of my absolute favorite locations for engagement sessions. The open fields, soft light, and wide skies photograph in such a timeless way, especially at golden hour. What most people don’t realize is that this area has a few quieter, tucked-away spots that aren’t immediately obvious from the main paths. They offer the same dreamy look with a more private feel, and they’re places I guide my couples to during their session. If you love the feel of Hartwood Acres Meadow, this is one of those locations where working with someone who knows it well truly makes a difference.
Hartwood Acre’s Mansion

Hartwood Acres Park offers a refined outdoor setting with tree-lined paths and an estate-like feel, plus the added elegance of the Hartwood Acres Mansion nearby for a more classic, timeless look. It’s an easy location to plan logistically as well, with free parking and plenty of space to move around without feeling rushed. This is a great option if you want nature that still feels polished and intentional.
North Park

North Park provides expansive natural scenery with lakes, rolling paths, and wooded areas that create a relaxed, outdoorsy atmosphere. Because of its size, it’s easy to find quieter pockets, making sessions here feel private and calm. This location works well year-round, with especially beautiful color in the fall.
Raccoon Creek State Park

Raccoon Creek State Park is ideal for couples who want a more adventurous feel with wooded trails, open spaces, and a sense of escape. This location feels less curated and more organic, perfect for couples who love the outdoors and don’t mind a bit of exploration.
Moraine State Park

Moraine State Park is a bit of a drive from Pittsburgh, but it offers a completely different experience once you arrive. With its expansive landscape, open skies, and a gorgeous lake as the focal point, this location feels peaceful and immersive. The scale of the park makes it easy to find quiet, scenic areas, which is ideal for couples who want their engagement session to feel relaxed, spacious, and removed from the busier city locations. It’s especially beautiful in the warmer months and near sunset, when the light reflects softly off the water.
Cleland Rock

Cleland Rock is a unique outdoor location that offers dramatic views and a more rugged, adventurous feel. It’s best suited for couples who enjoy hiking and don’t mind a short walk to reach the spot. The payoff is a striking, one-of-a-kind setting that feels intimate and bold.
Choosing the right engagement session location is about more than finding a beautiful backdrop. It’s about selecting a setting that feels natural to you, photographs beautifully, and sets the tone for the rest of your wedding experience. Whether you’re drawn to a refined cityscape, a romantic garden, or something a little more unexpected, I guide every couple through the process so their session feels intentional, effortless, and uniquely theirs.
If you’re recently engaged and beginning to plan, I’d love to help you create an engagement session that reflects your style and story. When you book with me, you also gain access to a curated list of lesser-known, off-the-radar locations throughout the Pittsburgh area that I reserve exclusively for my couples. If you’re ready for a fully guided, elevated experience, I’d love to connect.
